Though the tanks could negotiate almost any terrain, few of the bridges in Vietnam could accommodate their weight. Streams too deep to ford had to be crossed by ferries or pontoon bridges until stronger bridges were constructed by the engineers at a few critical crossings. (NARA)

As in both World War II and Korea, mines were the primary threat to the tanks. The shape of the M48A3 hull made it more resistant, saving the lives of numberless crewmen. This 1st Battalion tank struck a mine south of Danang. Note the missing gypsy rack. (NARA)
